What does this page calculate?
How far away a sign can be read depends on letter height, lighting, colours, typeface and how cluttered the surroundings are. The tool calculates the maximum reading distance, the comfortable reading distance and, for drivers, the reading time left from the letter height. The page opens with a 50 cm letter on a 50 km/h city street.
Quick table
For an internally lit, translucent face, black letters on white and ALL CAPS (legibility index 25 ft/in):
| Letter height | Simple setting | Moderately busy street | Pedestrian, barely legible | Pedestrian, comfortable |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10 cm | 30 m | 25 m | 12 m | 4.8 m |
| 20 cm | 60 m | 50 m | 24 m | 9.6 m |
| 30 cm | 90 m | 75 m | 36 m | 14.4 m |
| 50 cm | 150 m | 125 m | 60 m | 24 m |
| 100 cm | 300 m | 249 m | 120 m | 48 m |
Step by step
- Legibility index (LI): taken from the USSC table by lighting, colour pair, typeface and upper or mixed case (20–38 ft/in).
- Clutter correction: LI × 0.83 in a moderately busy urban setting, LI × 0.67 in a very busy one.
- Maximum distance: letter height (cm) × LI × 0.12 m; 1 ft/in equals a 12 cm per cm ratio.
- Comfortable distance: table LI × 0.65, because legibility drops by at least 35 % on real roads; it is not multiplied by the clutter correction as well (the smaller of the two applies).
- Time left for the driver: maximum distance ÷ speed (m/s), compared with the USSC reading time (detection + reading + back to road + manoeuvre).
Example: 50 cm letter, 50 km/h, 20 letters
Internally lit sign, capitals, moderately busy street: LI = 25 × 0.83 = 20.75. Maximum distance 50 × 20.75 × 0.12 = 124.5 m, comfortable distance (LI = 25 × 0.65 = 16.25) 50 × 16.25 × 0.12 = 97.5 m. At 50 km/h = 13.9 m/s the driver has 9.0 s. A 20-letter sign on a city street needs 1 + 2 + 0.8 + 5 = 8.8 s of reading time; the letter is just enough. Shorter copy or a 60 cm letter adds margin.
How to use the result
The values are a preliminary estimate; oblique viewing angles, obstacles such as trees or poles, rain and night shorten the reading distance. Once the letter height is set, continue to the channel letter and LED calculation, add the materials to the basket and request a quote. Our branch will reply with prices and stock.
