Eco-solvent, solvent, HP Latex and UV are four ink technologies. They differ in the carrier liquid and in how the print dries. Solvent and eco-solvent inks are solvent-based and bite into the media. Latex is water-based and dries with heat. UV ink cures instantly under a lamp. Flexible rolls such as vinyl and banner usually take the first three; rigid sheets take UV.

  • Roland describes its Eco-Sol MAX ink as virtually odourless, needing no special ventilation, with up to three years outdoors unlaminated (results vary by location).
  • HP says its Latex inks are up to 65% water, and prints come out dry and ready to laminate. Odour can depend on the media.
  • Solvent has a stronger smell and needs ventilation. Let the print gas off before laminating.
  • UV ink sits on the surface and stretches little, so it suits vehicle wraps less well.

Matching ink to media

  • Printable cast vehicle film: solvent, eco-solvent, latex and UV (product page).
  • Mesh and PVC banner: all four. See what is mesh banner.
  • Foam board, acrylic, composite: UV flatbed, or printed vinyl mounted on the sheet.

FAQ

What is the difference between eco-solvent and solvent?

Eco-solvent is a milder solvent mix with low odour. Solvent is stronger and smells more. Both need a wait before laminating.

Does latex print last outdoors?

It depends on the media and lamination. HP rates scratch resistance as comparable to hard-solvent ink on vinyl and PVC banner; ask for the datasheet for outdoor life.

Does every ink fit every printer?

No. Ink is chosen by printer model and print head. The wrong ink can damage the head.
